Omar Abdullah Mocks BJP Legal Notice With Satirical Trump Post Amid Bribery Row

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday intensified his political confrontation with the Bharatiya Janata Party by sharing a satirical fake social media post featuring United States President Donald Trump, shortly after receiving a legal notice from the BJP over his bribery allegations.

The edited post, which Abdullah shared on X with the caption, “If only!”, falsely portrayed Trump praising his campaign for the restoration of Jammu and Kashmir’s statehood. The fabricated message copied Trump’s well known speaking style and even referenced his “Make America Great Again” slogan. Trump has not made any such statement on any of his official social media accounts.

The exchange comes after Abdullah alleged that the BJP attempted to lure National Conference legislators by offering cash and ministerial positions to destabilise his government. According to his claim, at least one National Conference MLA was allegedly offered between ₹20 crore and ₹30 crore to switch sides.

In response, the BJP’s Jammu and Kashmir unit issued a legal notice demanding that Abdullah either provide evidence to support his allegations or publicly withdraw them. The notice warned that the party would file a ₹100 crore defamation suit if he failed to do either.

Reacting to the notice, Abdullah described it as a “love letter” from the BJP and said he considered receiving it an honour.

Speaking to reporters at the National Conference headquarters, he said the notice showed that the BJP viewed him as a significant political opponent. He also criticised the party for choosing legal action instead of responding politically to his allegations.

Abdullah said he could have raised the matter inside the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly, where legislative privilege would have protected his remarks from legal challenge, but deliberately chose to make the allegations outside the House.

He also indicated that the National Conference may begin issuing legal notices to certain BJP leaders over what he described as repeated defamatory statements against his party.

According to the legal notice, the BJP has asked Abdullah to withdraw his allegations in writing, issue an unconditional public apology within seven days, refrain from making similar statements in the future, and immediately stop circulating what it describes as defamatory claims.

Meanwhile, National Democratic Alliance ally and Nationalist Congress Party working president Praful Patel rejected Abdullah’s allegations. Patel said the BJP had respected democratic traditions after the Jammu and Kashmir Assembly elections by allowing the National Conference and its allies to form the government without interference.

He also dismissed suggestions that the BJP had attempted to undermine democracy, stating that the party has consistently worked within the democratic process.
