Officials Prepare for Interstate Cyclone Disaster Management Mock Drill
Mock drill to be held on October 1 across Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra, with six locations in Uttara Kannada including Bhatkal
Karwar: Uttara Kannada district authorities have begun preparations for an interstate cyclone disaster management mock drill scheduled for October 1 across Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sajid Mulla directed officials to complete all necessary preparations during a coordination meeting held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office in Karwar on Monday.
The exercise is being conducted under the directions of the National Disaster Management Authority and the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. It will focus on coordinated emergency response during a cyclone, with different departments working under a common command structure.
Officials will also assess the effective use of available resources and coordination between departments to ensure a quick response and protect the public during an emergency.
The mock drill will be conducted at 24 locations across Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra. In Uttara Kannada, the exercise will take place in Karwar, Ankola, Kumta, Honnavar, Gokarna and Bhatkal.
The exercise will cover several stages of cyclone response, including advance preparedness, public safety, evacuation, rehabilitation, relief operations and medical assistance.
Authorities said the main objective is to strengthen coordination between various agencies and reduce potential loss of life and property during a real cyclone.
Aditya Kumar, a retired Commandant from the Operations Division of the National Disaster Management Authority, briefed officials virtually on the procedures and responsibilities to be followed during the mock exercise.
Zilla Panchayat Deputy Secretary Prakash Halammanavar, KRIMS doctor Dr Vijayraj, DySP Girish, along with officials from the Fire and Emergency Services, Navy, State Disaster Response Force and other departments attended the meeting.
