Moral Policing Incident in Bhatkal Sparks Controversy as Police Register Cases Against Both Sides

Bhatkal: A recent moral policing incident in Bhatkal has triggered fresh debate after police registered separate cases based on complaints filed by both parties involved in the matter.
According to a complaint submitted to police, Shahid Khan alleged that he was taking a Hindu woman to a relative’s residence when a group of individuals stopped his vehicle and allegedly misbehaved with him. Based on his complaint, police have registered a case against several people and begun an investigation.
Later the same day, the woman also approached police with a complaint. She accused the young man of harassment and claimed that she had been forcibly taken in the vehicle. Police have registered a separate case on the basis of her statement and have launched an inquiry into the allegations.
It remains unclear whether the woman filed the complaint independently or under any external influence. Police have not made any official statement on this aspect, and investigations are ongoing.
The registration of a case against Hindu activists led to protests outside the police station, where a number of people gathered to express their anger. Leaders of Hindu organizations participating in the protest alleged that action had been taken against the activists who intervened, while no immediate action was initiated against the young man.
Protesters questioned why their complaint had not received prompt attention and demanded the withdrawal of the case registered against the activists. They also called for an impartial investigation and strict action against those found responsible. Demonstrators warned that further protests could follow if their demands were not addressed.
Reports indicate that police have taken the young man into custody. Meanwhile, the district Superintendent of Police visited Bhatkal to review the situation and assess developments on the ground.
A video from the protest has also been circulating on social media. The footage reportedly shows heated exchanges between some protest leaders and police personnel. The video has generated considerable public discussion, while police continue their investigation into the incident.
