Moon Sighted in Bhatkal, June 17 Declared First Day of Muharram 1448 AH
Qazis of Bhatkal have confirmed the sighting of the Muharram moon, marking the beginning of the Islamic New Year 1448 AH.

Bhatkal has officially welcomed the Islamic New Year after the moon of Muharram 1448 AH was sighted and confirmed by Qazis of the town.
Following the announcement, Tuesday, June 17, has been declared the first day of Muharram, the opening month of the Islamic calendar and the beginning of the year 1448 AH.
Religious leaders and community members have extended greetings on the occasion, praying that the new Islamic year brings peace, prosperity, safety, and blessings to the Muslim Ummah across the world. Special prayers were also offered for harmony and stability in all parts of the globe.
According to Islamic tradition, it is Sunnah to recite a specific supplication upon sighting the new moon:
“Allahumma ahillahu alayna bil yumni wal imani was salamati wal Islami, Rabbi wa Rabbukallah.”
Meanwhile, the 10th of Muharram, known as Ashura, will be observed on Friday, June 26.
The beginning of Muharram marks one of the most significant periods in the Islamic calendar, with Muslims around the world observing the month through prayer, reflection, and remembrance.
