Mangaluru Police Intensify Crackdown on Social Media Hate Posts
Despite warnings and legal action, authorities ramp up surveillance as provocative content continues to emerge through fake accounts.

MANGALURU, OCTOBER 27: Law enforcement agencies in Mangaluru have strengthened their monitoring of social media platforms in response to a recurring problem of hate speech and communally charged content being posted online.
The issue first escalated following a murder case in the district during April and May this year. During that period, numerous posts and stories aimed at stoking communal tensions spread rapidly across various social media platforms. While swift police action had brought the situation under control, recent weeks have seen a fresh wave of inflammatory content being shared through fake accounts.
In response, police have registered new cases and expanded their digital surveillance operations. Officers at every police station across the city have been tasked with regularly monitoring social media platforms, even during their off-duty hours. When hateful or provocative content is identified, cases are being registered on the spot without waiting for formal complaints.
The cybercrime division is actively investigating these cases and working to identify those behind the offensive posts. Authorities have emphasized that even individuals using fake profiles can be traced and brought to justice.
Mangaluru City Police Commissioner Sudheer Kumar Reddy addressed the issue directly, stating that multiple cases have already been filed against people who posted or shared hate-filled material. He made it clear that any content found to disrupt public order, incite communal feelings, spread hatred, or defame individuals would result in immediate legal action.
“Police personnel from every station are regularly checking social media. We will not hesitate to register cases suo motu against anyone violating the law,” Commissioner Reddy said.
The police have appealed to the public to exercise responsibility and caution while using social media. While acknowledging that these platforms serve as valuable tools for information sharing, they warned that misusing them to spread hate or misinformation is a serious criminal offense with legal consequences.
