Kolkata: Political tensions escalated sharply during the counting of votes for the West Bengal Assembly Elections as Chief Minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Mamata Banerjee made serious allegations against the Election Commission and the Bharatiya Janata Party.

Speaking to the media after early trends began to emerge, Mamata Banerjee claimed that the TMC was leading in nearly 70 to 100 seats. However, she questioned the transparency of the process, alleging that accurate figures of these leads were not being properly shared by the Election Commission.

She further accused the BJP of creating a misleading narrative of electoral advantage through media and social media platforms, while claiming that the ground reality showed a different picture.

Banerjee also raised concerns over alleged technical issues during counting, stating that in several locations the process was paused after only two or three rounds. She specifically referred to Kalyani, where she claimed irregularities were detected in at least seven electronic voting machines.

The Chief Minister also criticized the role of central security forces and the Election Commission, alleging harassment of TMC workers and attempts to take control of party offices in some areas. She urged counting agents of her party to remain inside counting centres at all times, warning that their absence could lead to manipulation of results.

Despite the concerns raised, Mamata Banerjee expressed confidence that the final outcome would favour the TMC. She said that by the end of the day, what she described as attempts at manipulation would fail and her party would emerge victorious once again.

Political observers note that the situation remains tense in several parts of the state, with close monitoring by the TMC leadership as counting progresses.
