Kerala Poll Body Seeks Report on BJP Leader’s ‘Love Jihad’ Remarks
Controversial campaign speech in Thiruvananthapuram sparks political backlash and complaint of hate speech.

The Chief Electoral Officer of Kerala, Rathan U. Kelkar, has asked for a detailed report on remarks made by BJP candidate P. K. Krishnadas during an election campaign in Kattakada, Thiruvananthapuram.
The directive was issued to the District Collector after Krishnadas made controversial statements in a public speech. He claimed that if either the LDF or the UDF comes to power, governance could be influenced by organisations like the Social Democratic Party of India and Jamaat-e-Islami.
Krishnadas further alleged that such a situation could lead to an increase in what he described as “love jihad,” claiming that Hindu women might be targeted for conversion and even used for anti national activities. His comments quickly triggered a political controversy across the state.
Following the speech, the SDPI’s Kattakada unit filed a police complaint, accusing the BJP leader of making communally charged and divisive statements.
Reacting to the row, Kerala BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar distanced the party from the remarks. He said such views do not represent the official stand of the BJP and added that any such position would have been clearly outlined in the party’s manifesto if it existed.
Krishnadas, however, stood by his comments. He said his statements reflect the ideological stance of the party and added that he is ready to respond through legal channels if required by the Election Commission.
The controversy comes amid similar remarks by senior BJP leaders. Union Minister Shobha Karandlaje recently claimed that Kerala is facing not only “love jihad” but also “business jihad” and “land jihad,” drawing criticism from opposition parties.
Adding to the debate, BJP candidate and former DGP R. Sreelekha also referred to “love jihad” during the campaign. Critics argue that such statements risk disturbing the state’s long standing religious harmony.
Officials have said the District Collector will review the speech and submit findings soon, after which further action may be considered.
