Karwar Kaiga Road in Poor Condition: MLA Sail Sets 48 Hour Deadline for Repairs
Joint inspection finds heavy vehicles carrying loads far beyond the road’s capacity
Karwar: Karwar MLA Satish Sail has assured that the badly damaged Karwar Kaiga road will be made motorable within the next 48 hours, following widespread complaints from the public.
Acting on the complaints, Sail visited the road at around 1:30 am on Monday and inspected its condition. A joint inspection was later conducted with Deputy Commissioner K. Lakshmipriya, the DySP, RTO, PWD officials and representatives of Kaiga and Megha Engineering Company.
During the inspection, officials found that heavy vehicles carrying loads of up to 80 tonnes were using a road designed to handle vehicles weighing around 30 tonnes. The excessive load has reportedly caused significant damage to the road.
Sail directed officials to take immediate steps to restrict the movement of overloaded vehicles and ensure that urgent repair work is completed. He said the road should be restored to a motorable condition within 48 hours.
Companies associated with the Kaiga project, including Megha Engineering, have also been asked to contribute towards repairing at least 10 kilometres of the road through their Corporate Social Responsibility funds.
Sail further said that arrangements for an alternative route for heavy vehicles would be examined. A high level meeting will soon be held at the Deputy Commissioner’s office to discuss the preparation of a road plan and other measures.
The poor condition of the road had caused difficulties for KSRTC buses, school vehicles, LPG supply vehicles and other motorists. Residents had raised repeated complaints over the issue.
Following reports highlighting the deteriorating condition of the road, elected representatives and officials conducted a joint inspection and initiated measures for urgent repairs and stricter control of overloaded vehicles.
