Karnataka Starts Door to Door Verification of Gruha Jyothi Beneficiaries From July 1
Officials will verify eligible households across the state to prevent misuse of the free electricity scheme.

The Karnataka Energy Department has launched a statewide door to door verification drive for beneficiaries of the Gruha Jyothi free electricity scheme from July 1. The exercise aims to ensure that only eligible households continue to receive the benefit.
As part of the verification process, meter readers and officials from the Electricity Supply Companies, also known as Escoms, will visit homes across the state. They will verify beneficiary details and update records using a mobile application and a declaration form.
Residents may be asked to present documents including Aadhaar for identity verification, a passport size photograph, voter ID, PAN card, ration card, caste certificate, and tenancy or rental agreement where applicable.
The Energy Department said the verification drive is intended to prevent misuse of the scheme and has urged the public to cooperate with officials during their visits.
The Gruha Jyothi scheme was introduced in July 2023 and offers up to 200 units of free electricity every month to eligible households across Karnataka.
The verification follows recent remarks by Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar, who said that some commercial establishments were allegedly benefiting from the scheme despite not being eligible. He called for a fresh review of beneficiaries to ensure the scheme reaches the intended households.
The department has clarified that the ongoing exercise is only meant to verify beneficiary information and that the Gruha Jyothi scheme will continue without any changes.
