Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has extended the deadline for the door to door reverification of beneficiaries under the state’s Gruha Jyothi scheme by one month.

The verification process, which was earlier scheduled to end on August 31, will now continue until September 30, 2026. The extension comes after officials faced difficulties completing the exercise in Bengaluru and several other parts of the state.

According to Electricity Department sources, the verification of beneficiaries began in July 2026. The Gruha Jyothi scheme itself was launched in July 2023 as part of the Congress government’s guarantee programmes.

With only around 70 percent of the verification work completed by the original deadline, the government decided to extend the process to ensure that eligible households are not excluded from the scheme.

Under Gruha Jyothi, eligible domestic consumers are provided up to 200 units of free electricity. The government ordered household level verification following complaints that the benefit was being misused, including for certain commercial purposes and by people who were not residing at the premises.

Data from the state’s electricity supply companies shows that verification is progressing across Karnataka.

Under Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company, known as BESCOM, around 46.7 lakh of its 68 lakh beneficiaries had been verified by August 31, representing approximately 67 percent of the total.

Verification work is also underway in areas served by the Mangalore, Hubballi, Gulbarga and Chamundeshwari electricity supply companies.

The extension is expected to give officials additional time to complete the process while allowing eligible beneficiaries to retain access to the scheme.
