Pressure is building within the ruling Indian National Congress in Karnataka for a cabinet reshuffle, with a group of senior MLAs planning to meet the party’s top leadership in New Delhi.

According to party sources, several experienced legislators, including T. B. Jayachandra and Assembly Chief Whip Ashok Pattan, are expected to travel to the capital. They are likely to hold discussions with party president Mallikarjun Kharge, along with senior leaders K. C. Venugopal and Randeep Singh Surjewala.

Jayachandra said the visit is a collective decision by senior legislators who have been elected multiple times. The plan was initially delayed due to by elections but has now been revived as key leaders are available in Delhi. Around 40 MLAs are expected to participate, and efforts are also being made to meet Rahul Gandhi during the visit.

The legislators argue that while younger leaders have been given opportunities over the past three years, it is now time to include more experienced members in the cabinet. Their primary demand is to secure ministerial positions for senior leaders who have long administrative experience.

This group had earlier met Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, urging him to carry out a reshuffle and accommodate them in the ministry. They had indicated that at least 20 legislators should be considered in any such exercise.

The demand for a reshuffle is not limited to senior leaders. Some first and second term MLAs have also been pushing for changes, highlighting growing internal pressure within the party.

The issue has gained significance amid an ongoing power struggle within the state unit, particularly over the chief minister’s post. While Siddaramaiah is reportedly open to reshuffling the cabinet, Deputy Chief Minister D. K. Shivakumar is said to prefer clarity on leadership before any changes are made.

Party insiders suggest that if the high command approves the reshuffle, it could indicate that Siddaramaiah will continue as chief minister for the full five year term, reducing the chances of Shivakumar stepping into the role.

Karnataka currently has a sanctioned cabinet strength of 34 ministers, including the chief minister. Two positions remain vacant following the resignation of B. Nagendra over alleged financial irregularities, and the removal of K. N. Rajanna on directions from the party leadership.
