Karnataka Cabinet Approves Recruitment of 800 Urdu and 200 Marathi Teachers

Bengaluru: The Karnataka government has approved the recruitment of 800 Urdu teachers and 200 Marathi teachers, a decision expected to provide relief to schools and students affected by a shortage of teaching staff.

The move comes after sustained demands from minority organisations, public representatives and education groups for the government to fill vacant Urdu teacher positions across the state.

Concerns had been raised after Urdu and other minority language teaching posts were not included in a recent recruitment process. Organisations including Urdu Bachao Tehreek, SDPI and ITA had urged the government to address the shortage.

Several delegations also met AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Education Minister Madhu Bangarappa, submitting memoranda seeking the appointment of Urdu teachers.

Kalaburagi MLA Kaniz Fatima had also raised the issue with the government and called for urgent action to address the shortage in Urdu medium schools.

The matter had also reached the Dharwad bench of the Karnataka High Court, adding to the pressure on the government to take steps to fill vacant teaching positions.

The cabinet’s approval of 800 Urdu teacher posts has therefore been welcomed as an important step following months of demands.

However, education and social organisations have pointed out that the sanctioned posts may still fall short of the actual requirement. They argue that the state has a large number of Urdu medium schools and educational institutions, many of which continue to face staff shortages.

These groups have urged the government to conduct a detailed assessment of vacancies and include additional Urdu teacher posts in the next phase of recruitment.

They said filling more vacancies would help ensure regular classes and improve the quality of education for students studying in Urdu medium schools.
