Himanta Biswa Sarma resigns as Assam Chief Minister after BJP’s victory
Caretaker role continues as BJP prepares to form new government in Assam

Himanta Biswa Sarma stepped down as the Chief Minister of Assam on Wednesday, along with his council of ministers, clearing the way for the formation of a new government following the Assembly election results.
The resignation comes after the BJP led National Democratic Alliance secured a strong mandate, winning 102 seats in the 126 member विधानसभा. The elections were conducted in a single phase on April 9, with counting completed on May 4.
According to an official statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, Sarma submitted his resignation to Governor Laxman Acharya at Lok Bhawan after the formal notification of the election results. The Governor accepted the resignation and asked Sarma to continue as caretaker Chief Minister until the new administration takes charge.
Speaking to reporters after submitting his resignation, Sarma said the swearing in ceremony for the new government is expected to take place after May 11. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been invited to attend the event.
Sarma also said that the next Chief Minister will be chosen during a meeting of the BJP legislature party, which will be held in the presence of central observers.
The BJP’s decisive win has set the stage for the continuation of its leadership in the state, with formalities now underway to constitute the new government.
