In another setback for consumers struggling with rising living costs, state owned oil companies have increased the price of the 14.2 kilogram domestic LPG cylinder by ₹29. Following the hike, the price of a household gas cylinder in Delhi has gone up from ₹913 to ₹942.

The revised rates came into effect on June 7, adding further pressure on families already dealing with inflation and higher household expenses.

The latest increase has also sparked a political debate. The Congress party strongly criticized the Narendra Modi government, accusing it of burdening ordinary citizens while benefiting large corporate interests.

In a post on social media platform X, Congress said inflation has once again hit the public hard, claiming that the government’s policies are focused on collecting more from the people while helping wealthy business groups.

Samajwadi Party chief and former Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav also attacked the BJP government over the price rise. In his post on X, he highlighted the difficulties faced by common people and said growing inflation has shattered public expectations from the ruling party.

This is not the first fuel related price increase in recent weeks. On June 1, oil companies raised the price of 19 kilogram commercial LPG cylinders by ₹42.

Apart from cooking gas, transportation costs have also been rising. Recently, the price of Compressed Natural Gas, or CNG, was increased by ₹2 per kilogram in Delhi and the National Capital Region. Since May 15, CNG prices have been revised four times, resulting in a total increase of ₹6 per kilogram.

The continuous rise in fuel and gas prices is expected to have a direct impact on household budgets, particularly for low and middle income families. Experts believe the increase could also push up the prices of essential goods and services in the coming weeks.

Political observers say opposition parties are likely to intensify their campaign on the issue, with the possibility of public protests against the government. So far, the government has not issued any detailed statement explaining the latest price hike, and there appears to be little immediate relief in sight for consumers.
