Eid al Adha Sacrifice Restrictions in Kalyan Spark Anger Among Muslim Residents
Police imposed restrictions on animal sacrifice in several housing societies citing law and order concerns, drawing criticism from local Muslim communities.
Tensions have emerged in Maharashtra’s Kalyan city after authorities imposed restrictions on animal sacrifice in several residential societies during Eid al Adha. The move was taken by police and civic authorities following objections from some residents and concerns about maintaining communal harmony.
According to local residents, security personnel were deployed at the entrances of multiple housing complexes, including the Patripool area, with barricades and strict monitoring in place. Many people returning from Eid prayers said they were surprised to see the restrictions, claiming they had received little or no prior information about the decision..
Several Muslim residents expressed disappointment, stating that animal sacrifice had been carried out peacefully in the same locations for many years without major issues. They argued that the sudden restrictions created confusion and made it difficult for families to perform religious rituals associated with Eid al Adha.
Residents also pointed to practical challenges, noting that the area’s limited slaughterhouse facilities would be unable to accommodate the large number of animals within the short period available during the festival. Some community members questioned why restrictions were imposed even in localities where Muslims form a significant portion of the population.Authorities, however, defended the decision, saying the measures were introduced to prevent possible disputes and maintain public order after complaints were received regarding animal sacrifice in shared residential spaces.
Meanwhile, a separate controversy unfolded at the historic Durgadi Fort, where police detained BJP corporator Mahesh Patil during protests over temporary restrictions related to access arrangements around Eid prayers. The site, which contains both a temple and a mosque, has long been considered sensitive from a law and order perspective.
Police maintained a strong security presence in the area throughout the festival period to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents.
