At least 18 people have lost their lives as massive wildfires tear through central and southern Chile, forcing thousands to flee their homes and leaving entire communities in ruins.

The deadly fires have burned through more than 8,500 hectares of forest and destroyed hundreds of homes across the affected regions. Around 50,000 residents have been evacuated as firefighters struggle to contain the rapidly spreading flames.

President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of catastrophe in the Biobio and Nuble regions, located approximately 500 kilometers south of the capital city Santiago. The emergency declaration enables better coordination with military forces to fight the two dozen active wildfires.

“All resources are available,” President Boric said on social media platform X.

However, local officials on the ground painted a different picture. Rodrigo Vera, mayor of the coastal town of Penco in Biobio, expressed frustration over the lack of immediate government response.

“Dear President Boric, from the bottom of my heart, I have been here for four hours, a community is burning and there is no government presence,” Vera said. “How can a minister do nothing but call me to tell me that the military is going to arrive at some point?”

Security Minister Luis Cordero confirmed that emergency teams are working to bring the situation under control.

Firefighting efforts have been severely hampered by extreme weather conditions. Strong winds and scorching temperatures exceeding 38 degrees Celsius have made it nearly impossible to contain the flames.

Many residents were caught off guard when the fires struck after midnight, leaving them trapped in their homes with little time to escape.

“Many people didn’t evacuate. They stayed in their houses because they thought the fire would stop at the edge of the forest,” said John Guzmán, 55, a resident of Penco. “It was completely out of control. No one expected it.”

The sky over Penco turned orange from thick smoke as the fires consumed everything in their path.

While the exact number of destroyed homes across the country remains unknown, officials in one municipality of Concepcion reported 253 houses reduced to ashes.

The fires have destroyed not just homes but entire neighborhoods, including schools, churches, and vehicles. In Penco, most of the city has been engulfed by flames.

“We fled running, with the kids, in the dark,” recalled Juan Lagos, 52, a resident who barely escaped with his family.

The human toll has been heartbreaking. Bodies have been discovered in fields, homes, along roads, and inside burned vehicles.

“From what we can see, there are people who died, and we knew them well,” said Víctor Burboa, 54, a local resident. “Everyone here knew them.”

As Chile continues to battle the ongoing heat wave, authorities are racing against time to prevent further loss of life and bring the devastating wildfires under control.
