Bhatkal: The Uttara Kannada Police have intensified action following tension in Bhatkal over the disputed structure located near National Highway 66. Police confirmed that five criminal cases have been registered so far, while around 40 people have been taken into custody in connection with the incident.

The controversy began after authorities moved ahead with relocation work linked to the widening of NH 66. Officials stated that the structure was standing on government land, and arrangements were being made to shift it to another nearby location so that local practices could continue without disturbing highway development work.

However, the issue created concern among members of the local community, who gathered to question the relocation process and raise their objections. The situation later became tense, leading to police intervention to maintain law and order.

According to police, cases have been registered in connection with obstruction of official duty, damage to public property, unlawful assembly, and alleged assault on police personnel. Authorities said the investigation is still underway and further action will be taken based on evidence.

Police also arrested Muteeb Mohammed Mohammed Ashraf, a resident of Azad Nagar in Bhatkal, for allegedly sharing videos related to the issue on social media in a manner that could disturb public peace. He has been remanded to judicial custody.

In view of the sensitive situation, more than 850 police personnel have been deployed across Bhatkal. Senior police officers, inspectors, sub inspectors, armed reserve teams, KSRP units, and Special Action Force personnel are monitoring the town closely.

Police officials said the situation is now peaceful and under control. They have urged the public not to spread rumours, provocative videos, or misleading messages on social media.The department has warned that strict legal action will be taken against anyone attempting to disturb communal harmony or public order through false information.
