Bengaluru Residents May Have to Pay Up to Rs 25,000 a Year for Roadside Parking

BENGALURU: Residents across Bengaluru may soon have to pay an annual fee to park their vehicles on public roads outside their homes, if a new proposal from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike is approved.

The civic body has drafted a residential parking policy aimed at addressing traffic congestion and unauthorized parking on residential streets.

Under the proposed system, residents who regularly park their vehicles on roads in front of their homes would be required to obtain an annual parking permit from the BBMP.

The proposed fee would depend on factors including the type of vehicle and parking demand in the area. Annual charges could start at Rs 1,000 for two wheelers and go up to Rs 25,000 for larger private vehicles and commercial vehicles in areas where parking demand is high.

Civic officials said the policy is intended to encourage residents to use off street parking facilities and dedicated parking structures wherever possible.

The plan would also introduce designated parking spaces within residential areas. Parking permits would be issued on a first come, first served basis, with specific sections of public roads marked for permitted parking.

Officials believe the system could help free up residential roads, improve traffic movement and make streets safer for pedestrians.

However, the proposal has received mixed reactions. Some citizen welfare groups and commuters have questioned whether residents should have to pay additional charges for parking near their homes.

Others have welcomed the move, arguing that better regulation is necessary to address Bengaluru’s growing parking problems and the increasing pressure on limited road space.

The proposal is yet to be implemented and could be subject to further changes following discussions and feedback from residents and stakeholders.
