After Tulu Recognition Efforts, SDPI Demands Official Status for Urdu in Open Letter to Chief Minister
Social Democratic Party of India state leadership cites census figures and deep cultural roots, urging the Karnataka government to accord official language recognition to Urdu.
Following recent administrative steps toward recognizing Tulu, the Social Democratic Party of India (SDPI) has submitted an open letter to Karnataka Chief Minister DK Shivakumar demanding official language status for Urdu across the state.
SDPI Karnataka State President Abdul Majeed highlighted demographic data, pointing out that Urdu speakers represent a significant segment of the state’s population. He argued that a substantial speaker base, coupled with long standing educational and literary institutions, merits formal government recognition and structured state support.
The letter urged the state administration to extend official status to Urdu alongside Kannada and other recognized regional languages. The party emphasized that such recognition would ensure equitable resource allocation for Urdu medium schools, institutional support for literary academies, and improved access to official documentation for Urdu speaking residents.
SDPI leaders requested the Chief Minister to form an expert committee or take legislative steps similar to those initiated for Tulu, ensuring linguistic inclusivity and preserving Karnataka’s multi ethnic heritage.
