Administration Demolishes TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee’s Party Office in Amtala Over Building Rule Violations
Authorities say the party office was built without approval, while the demolition has sparked fresh political reactions.
The South 24 Parganas district administration on Saturday began demolishing a Trinamool Congress party office linked to MP Abhishek Banerjee in Amtala after officials found that the building did not have an approved construction plan and violated building regulations.
Excavators were used to bring down the structure under tight security. Police and central security personnel were deployed across the area, while Fire and Emergency Services teams remained on standby. Senior police and administrative officials monitored the operation to ensure it was carried out without any disturbance.
The demolition drew celebrations from local Bharatiya Janata Party workers, who gathered near the site and raised slogans in support of their party. BJP MLA Agnishwar Naskar said the administration had taken the right step, claiming the building had been constructed illegally and that the action was in line with the law.
Abhishek Banerjee, the Trinamool Congress MP representing the Diamond Harbour constituency, which includes Amtala, had not made any public statement at the time of reporting.
Officials said the action followed complaints about unauthorised construction. Notices were issued on July 15 asking those concerned to appear before the authorities and provide documents related to the land and the building.
According to the administration, the land was reportedly purchased in the name of a company called Leaps and Bounds. As no response was received to the notices, officials moved ahead with the demolition process.
A senior district official told PTI that every step was being taken in accordance with legal procedures. The official said the notices were issued after complaints were received and added that the matter remains under legal consideration, with further action to depend on the hearing and applicable laws.
The incident has added to the political tensions in the region. While BJP leaders described the demolition as an example of the rule of law being enforced, the Trinamool Congress is expected to respond in the coming days.
