Abdul El-Sayed Makes History as First Muslim Elected to US Senate, Has Family Roots in Bhatkal
The Egyptian American politician's reported victory in Michigan has drawn attention in Bhatkal because his father in law, Dr. Tayyib Jukaku, belongs to the coastal Karnataka town.

Bhatkal (Fikrokhabar News): Dr. Abdulrahman Mohammed El-Sayed, an Egyptian American political leader from Michigan, has reportedly won a seat in the United States Senate, becoming the first Muslim and first Egyptian American to enter the Senate. His reported victory has also attracted attention in Bhatkal, as he has family connections to the coastal Karnataka town through his father in law, Dr. Tayyib Jukaku, a well known physician in the United States.
El-Sayed reportedly defeated Republican candidate Mike Rogers in the election. His achievement has been described as a significant development in American politics, particularly in terms of representation of Muslim and immigrant communities.
Campaign Marked by Controversy Over Name and Religious Identity
During his election campaign, El-Sayed faced criticism and attacks targeting his Arabic name and Muslim identity. Some Republican circles reportedly mocked his name and attempted to associate him with Egypt’s Muslim Brotherhood.
Responding to such remarks, he had earlier addressed former President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance, saying that one day they would have to address him as “Senator” rather than focus on his name.
El-Sayed kept his campaign focused on everyday public concerns rather than religious or ethnic identity. He argued that his name and faith were being used to distract voters from important issues, pointing out that religion could not lower petrol prices or ease the rising cost of essential goods.
He first secured the Democratic Party nomination by defeating senior party leader Haley Stevens before going on to defeat Mike Rogers in the general election.
Academic Background, Medical Career and Public Service
Born on October 31, 1984, in Rochester Hills, Michigan, Abdulrahman El-Sayed is the son of Mohamed El-Sayed, who migrated from Egypt to the United States. His father was an engineer and also served as an imam, while his mother, Faten Elkomy, is a nurse practitioner.
El-Sayed graduated with distinction in Biology and Political Science from the University of Michigan. He later received the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship and pursued a doctorate in Public Health at the University of Oxford. He subsequently earned his medical degree from Columbia University and also served as an assistant professor in epidemiology.
At the age of 30, he was appointed Executive Director of the Detroit Health Department. During his tenure, he worked to strengthen the financially troubled department and address environmental pollution. He also campaigned to reduce the impact of harmful emissions from petroleum refineries.
During the Flint water crisis, he initiated water testing in schools to protect children from lead contamination.
Later, as Health Director of Wayne County, he introduced a programme that helped cancel approximately 95 million dollars in medical debt owed by more than 100,000 residents.
Family Connection to Bhatkal Through Dr. Tayyib Jukaku
El-Sayed’s reported Senate victory has a special connection with Bhatkal through his wife, Dr. Sarah Jukaku, daughter of Dr. Tayyib Jukaku, a well known physician originally from Bhatkal.
Dr. Tayyib Jukaku has served as a nephrologist in the United States and has also been associated with various social and charitable organisations.
He is the son of the late Shamsuddin Jukaku, a prominent social and political figure from Bhatkal. Shamsuddin Jukaku was elected once from the Bombay Presidency and twice from the Honnavar constituency. He also served as Deputy Minister of Finance.
Abdulrahman El-Sayed and Dr. Sarah married in 2006 and have two daughters. Through this family connection, the reported political achievement has also brought attention to Bhatkal and its links with the Indian diaspora in the United States.
Progressive Economic Policies and Public Welfare
In terms of political outlook, El-Sayed is considered close to the progressive economic policies associated with Senator Bernie Sanders. He opposes election funding from major corporate companies and supports campaigns financed through small contributions from ordinary citizens.
He supports publicly funded healthcare coverage for all Americans under the proposed Medicare for All system. He has also raised concerns about the potential impact of the unchecked expansion of artificial intelligence on workers’ rights.
He has argued that the rising electricity consumption of large data centres should not result in additional financial burdens for ordinary consumers.
Critical of Israeli Policies and the War in Gaza
On foreign policy, El-Sayed has strongly criticised Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, describing it as genocide and calling for an immediate halt to US military assistance to Israel.
He has also criticised the political influence of the pro Israel lobbying organisation AIPAC.
He maintains that American taxpayers’ money should be directed towards education, healthcare and public welfare at home rather than being spent on weapons used in foreign conflicts.
El-Sayed’s reported electoral success has drawn attention to questions of Muslim representation, immigrant participation and public policy in American politics. His family connection to Bhatkal has made the development particularly significant for residents of the coastal town and the wider Indian community.
