Karwar: The Fisheries Department has announced a complete ban on mechanised fishing operations along the Karnataka coast, including Uttara Kannada district, from June 1 to July 31. The restriction will remain in force for 61 days as part of annual measures to protect marine resources during the monsoon season and the peak fish breeding period.

The monsoon months are considered crucial for the reproduction of several marine species. To ensure the conservation and growth of fish populations, the department has prohibited the use of mechanised fishing vessels during this period.

According to the order, all mechanised boats and fishing vessels fitted with inboard or outboard engines exceeding 10 horsepower are barred from operating. The use of any fishing nets or equipment on such vessels is also strictly prohibited throughout the ban period.

However, traditional fishing boats and motorised vessels with engine capacities below 10 horsepower will be allowed to operate. Fishermen using these boats must follow all prescribed safety measures, including the mandatory use of life saving equipment while venturing into the sea.

The Fisheries Department has warned that strict action will be taken against anyone violating the ban. Boat owners found engaging in illegal fishing activities during the restricted period may face legal proceedings. In addition, government benefits, including tax free diesel subsidies and other assistance provided to fishing vessels, may be withdrawn.

Officials have appealed to all fishermen and boat owners to cooperate with the restrictions, stating that the annual ban is essential for the long term protection of marine wealth and the sustainability of the fishing industry along the coast.
