A Muslim woman died after allegedly being assaulted by a mob in Bihar’s Madhubani district, in an incident that has sparked anger among local residents and community leaders.

The victim, identified as Roshan Khatoon, was a resident of Amhi village in the Ghoghardiha area. According to residents and police officials, she had gone to meet the village head on February 28 to seek help in resolving a local dispute.

However, instead of receiving assistance, Khatoon was allegedly attacked by the village head’s son, identified as Manu Singh, along with several others. Witnesses claimed that she was tied to a pole and brutally beaten during the incident.

Khatoon suffered serious injuries in the assault and was later taken for treatment. She died on March 1 at Patna Medical College and Hospital.

Some residents alleged that the attackers also verbally abused her during the incident. A local digital publication, Mithla Samachar, reported that Khatoon had been fasting at the time and had asked for water during the beating. It also claimed she was forced to drink alcohol mixed with urine. However, police officials said these details have not yet been verified.

A police officer involved in the investigation said authorities are currently examining all claims related to the incident.

“We have seen some reports about the victim fasting and asking for water, but at this stage we cannot confirm those details. The investigation is still ongoing and all aspects are being looked into,” the officer said.

Following the incident, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation. Officials confirmed that the son of the village head has been detained and is being questioned.

“We have detained the village head’s son and are questioning him. We are also identifying others who were present during the incident. Strict action will be taken against anyone found responsible,” a police official said.

Police teams have also been deployed in the village to prevent any further tension and maintain law and order. Authorities are speaking with residents and collecting statements from witnesses.

The death of Roshan Khatoon has triggered outrage among local residents and social activists, who are demanding strict legal action against those involved. Her husband has reportedly demanded the death penalty for the accused.

Community leaders said the incident has deeply shocked villagers.

“People usually go to village leaders hoping for peaceful resolution of disputes. What happened to Roshan Khatoon has disturbed many families here,” a local resident said.

Ajay Mansuri, state president of the Mansuri community, said efforts will be made to ensure justice for the victim.

“We will pursue this case and ensure that justice is delivered. The culprits must face the strongest punishment,” he said.

Police officials said the investigation is ongoing and further arrests may be made as more evidence is gathered.

“We will examine every detail of the case. No one involved will be spared under the law,” an officer said.
