Karwar (Fikrokhabar News): District Superintendent of Police Deepan M.N. stressed the importance of protecting the sea, calling it the foundation of human life and global climate. Speaking at the inauguration of a beach cleaning program held at Thimmakka Tree Park near Rabindranath Tagore Beach, he reminded participants that every climate change and environmental shift is directly linked to the sea.
The event was organized on Saturday as part of Seva Parv 2025 and International Coastal Cleanup Day by the Regional Directorate (Environment), Department of Forest, Wildlife and Environment, and the Karwar Forest Division.
“The ocean is one of the greatest gifts of nature. If it remains clean, the world will enjoy a healthier environment. But if we pollute it, the negative impacts will fall back on us. It is our shared responsibility to keep it safe,” Deepan said.
Additional Deputy Commissioner Sajid Mulla added that beach cleaning should not be treated as a one-day effort but carried out continuously.
Deputy Conservator of Forests Ravishankar, who presided over the program, pointed out that nearly one ton of plastic enters the ocean every minute, leading to the deaths of around one million birds and one lakh marine animals each year. He stressed the importance of reducing single-use plastics and highlighted the role of youth in protecting marine ecosystems.
The program was attended by Zilla Panchayat CEO Dr. Dilish Shashi, Seva Parv 2025 Nodal Officer Rajesh Kumar, DFO of Social Forestry Manjunath Navi, and Senior Geologist Asha. Regional CRZ Director Praveen Kumar Basrur delivered the keynote, while Range Forest Officers Kiran Manavachari and Gajanan Naik handled the welcome and vote of thanks.
More than 1,500 kilograms of waste were collected by college students, forest staff, and members of the public. The event also featured competitions on coastal protection, followed by prize distribution and an oath to safeguard the coastline.
