As the Global Sumud Flotilla gets ready to leave Bizerte, Tunisia, key factors have contributed to its extended stay. Journalist Fahmida Miller from Al Jazeera highlighted several challenges behind the delay.

First, safety concerns arose after two flotilla vessels, the Family and the Alma, were attacked overnight while docked in Sidi Bou Said. Although no one was injured, the incidents heightened fears for the security of passengers, crew, and ships.

Second, maintenance issues needed to be addressed. Some vessels that have been part of the flotilla since its start in Barcelona required repairs before continuing their journey.

Lastly, bureaucratic and logistical challenges played a role. The flotilla faced a number of administrative delays, but several boats from Tunisia, Sicily, and Greece are now joining forces, ready to set sail together toward Gaza.

These factors combined to extend the flotilla’s stay in Tunisia as organizers prioritize safety, maintenance, and proper coordination for the final leg of their mission.
