White House Slams Nobel Committee as Venezuelan Activist Wins Peace Prize
Officials accuse the committee of "politics over peace" after Donald Trump was overlooked for the prestigious award given to María Corina Machado.

OSLO – The White House strongly criticized the Norwegian Nobel Committee on Friday after Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado was awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize, leaving President Donald Trump without the honor once again.
A White House spokesperson expressed disappointment, suggesting the decision was politically motivated. “Once again, the Nobel Committee has proved they place politics over peace,” the official told Reuters. This echoes a long-held view by the Trump administration that the committee is biased against him.
The prestigious award was given to María Corina Machado for what the committee called her “unrelenting fight to restore democracy” in Venezuela. In its official statement, the committee described her as a “beacon of hope” for her efforts to achieve a peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy.
The Nobel Committee highlighted Machado’s “tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela” at a time when many countries are facing a rise in authoritarian rule.
Along with the honor, Machado will receive prize money of 11 million Swedish kronor (about $1.2 million).
The committee’s choice places a spotlight on the contrast between Machado’s grassroots activism against an authoritarian government and President Trump’s claims of brokering major international peace deals.
