A heartbreaking incident has shaken West Bengal’s Birbhum district, where a young man reportedly ended his life after his name was excluded from the voter list.

The deceased, identified as 32-year-old Anwarul Sheikh from Nalhati, had been marked as “pending verification” in the supplementary electoral roll. Despite submitting all required documents and appealing at the Rampur Hat sub-divisional office, his name remained uncertain. According to his family, the prolonged process left him deeply distressed.

Relatives say that after returning home from the office, Sheikh was overwhelmed with anxiety. In that state, he consumed poison. He was rushed to Nalhati Primary Health Center and later transferred for further treatment, but tragically, he passed away on the way. He leaves behind a wife and two young children.

The incident has sparked grief across the community. Locals allege that many genuine voters, particularly from marginalized backgrounds, are being unfairly removed from the rolls despite providing proper documentation. They argue that the revision process lacks transparency and has created widespread fear.

Community members warn that if such exclusions continue, they may boycott the upcoming elections. The tragedy has intensified questions about whether the voter list revision is being conducted fairly and responsibly.

Police have registered a case and sent the body for postmortem to confirm the exact cause of death. Investigations are ongoing.

This case highlights growing concerns in West Bengal, where thousands of names have reportedly been deleted during the special revision of electoral rolls. Critics insist that greater care and transparency are urgently needed to prevent genuine voters from being disenfranchised.
