UPI Goes PIN-Free with New Biometric Authentication Feature
NPCI's new features aim to make digital transactions faster, more secure, and accessible through new technologies.
The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has launched a major update for UPI users, allowing them to approve payments using biometric authentication. This means you can now use your fingerprint or face ID to verify transactions on apps like Google Pay, PhonePe, and Paytm, providing a convenient alternative to the traditional six-digit PIN.
The new feature was unveiled at the Global Fintech Fest in Mumbai. Officials from NPCI described the upgrade as “faster, simpler, and secure,” designed to make digital payments easier for everyone. For users who prefer the old method, the option to use a PIN for transactions will still be available.
In addition to biometric payments, NPCI announced several other innovative features:
- UPI Multi-Signatory: This option is for joint bank accounts. It requires approval from more than one person before a payment can be completed, adding a layer of security for shared funds.
- UPI Lite on Wearables: An exciting development allows users to make small payments with wearable smart glasses. This technology enables hands-free transactions by letting users scan a QR code and approve the payment with a voice command, without needing a mobile phone.
- UPI Cash Point: This feature turns local shops and pharmacies into mini-ATMs. Users can visit a participating store to withdraw or deposit cash by simply scanning a QR code with their UPI app.
These updates come as UPI continues to be a dominant force in India’s digital payment ecosystem. According to the latest data, UPI processed over 1,963 crore transactions in September 2025, amounting to a total value of ₹24.89 lakh crore.
