A UN food expert has made a shocking statement, saying “the UN died in Gaza” when two Palestinian children died from hunger earlier this year.

Michael Fakhri, the UN’s special food advisor, was referring to two children – two-month-old Mahmoud Fattouh and 10-year-old Yazan al-Kafarneh – who starved to death in February and March.

“These were the first children killed by hunger during Israel’s starvation campaign in Gaza,” Fakhri told a UN meeting in New York.

He described the terrible reality for parents in Gaza: “When a parent holds their starving child who is dying from hunger, it means an entire society is under attack. Every time a child dies from hunger, the world becomes a darker place.”

Fakhri accused Israel of conducting “the fastest starvation campaign in modern history” and said the starvation continues even during the current ceasefire.

He urged the UN to send peacekeepers to protect aid convoys entering Gaza, asking: “If peacekeepers aren’t used to stop starvation and genocide, then what else are we doing here?”
