UN Chief: Israel Not Open to Serious Ceasefire Talks in Gaza
United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres warned that Israel is determined to “go up to the end” in its military campaign in Gaza and is not open to serious negotiations for a ceasefire. Speaking on Tuesday, Guterres said this stance carries dramatic consequences from Israel’s point of view.
He expressed grave concern about the humanitarian situation in Gaza, describing it as “horrendous” and highlighting the massive killing of civilians and ongoing destruction. Guterres underscored the need for an immediate ceasefire, the unconditional release of hostages, and unimpeded humanitarian access across Gaza.
Guterres also pointed to the paralysis of the UN Security Council as a major obstacle to resolving the conflict, noting the divided states limit the UN’s effectiveness. He affirmed his willingness to meet Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and U.S. President Donald Trump to seek a resolution at the United Nations.
The Secretary-General’s comments came amid intensified Israeli operations in Gaza, with widespread reports of civilian suffering and displacement.
