The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has reportedly announced that a new Aadhaar card design will be introduced from December 2025, featuring only the cardholder’s photograph and a secure QR code. Details such as name, address, date of birth and biometric information would not appear on the physical card under the proposed changes.

According to UIDAI CEO Bhuvanesh Kumar, who spoke during an online conference, the move aims to reduce the risk of Aadhaar misuse by preventing sensitive personal information from being shared through photocopies or digital images of the card. The new system would also apply to services such as hotel check-ins and SIM card registrations, he said.

UIDAI is also expected to launch a new mobile application by December 2025, allowing users to share their Aadhaar details digitally without needing a physical copy. The app will support up to five profiles, and will include options for biometric lock and unlock to enhance security.

Under the redesigned system, only the user’s photo and QR code will be displayed. The QR code will be scannable exclusively through UIDAI-approved applications, gradually phasing out traditional photo-based verification.

The move is intended to improve user privacy and reduce the possibility of Aadhaar misuse, as the new card will contain minimal visible information, reducing exposure of personal data.
