Udupi: The Paryaya Puttige Math has placed five major development proposals before Prime Minister Narendra Modi, seeking a comprehensive boost to infrastructure and economic growth across the coastal belt. The demands were presented by Paryaya Sri Sugunendra Teertha Swamiji and junior pontiff Sri Sushreendra Teertha Swamiji during the Laksha Kantha Geetha Parayana programme held on November 28.

To improve public transport and regional connectivity, the Math urged the Centre to introduce a metro service linking Udupi and Mangaluru. It further proposed the establishment of a new international airport in Udupi, utilising the 1,000-acre land reserved near Padubidri. According to the Math, such an airport would significantly benefit trade, tourism, education, and healthcare in the region.

Highlighting that Udupi district has nearly 100 km of coastline and important ports like Malpe, the Math suggested developing the area into an international-standard port hub. It also appealed for a review and relaxation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms to support fisheries, seafood exports, and tourism.

Noting Udupi’s strong presence of educational and technical institutions, the Math proposed the creation of an IT Park and an AI Innovation Park under the Digital India and Startup India missions. It additionally requested support for building advanced cloud-computing infrastructure to attract tech-based growth.

The petition also emphasised the cultural significance of Kambala, the traditional buffalo race of coastal Karnataka. The Math urged the Centre to recognise it as a national sport, accompanied by financial assistance and infrastructure development to preserve and promote this regional heritage.

The Math stated that these initiatives would collectively help transform the coastal region into a major centre for economic, cultural, and technological progress.
