Udupi, August 21: The Brahmavar police on Thursday arrested Mahesh Shetty Timarodi, founder of Rashtriya Hindu Jagarana Vedike and a known supporter in the Soujanya case, for allegedly making derogatory comments against BJP National General Secretary (Organisation) B.L. Santhosh.

According to police sources, Timarodi had posted objectionable remarks on social media, using abusive words aimed at B.L. Santhosh. It is also alleged that his statements were capable of creating tensions among communities. Following this, a formal complaint was lodged by Rajeev Kulal, president of the Udupi Rural BJP Mandal.

Police had earlier issued two notices to Timarodi, directing him to appear for questioning. However, after he failed to respond, Inspector Ashok Malgi along with his team visited his residence in Timarodi, near Ujire, on Thursday morning and brought him to the station.

He was reportedly questioned for over two and a half hours, and later interrogated again under the supervision of Udupi Superintendent of Police Hariram Shankar. In the evening, he was formally arrested. Before being produced at the Brahmavar court, he was taken to the Brahmavar Community Health Centre for a mandatory medical check-up.

News of his arrest led to a large crowd gathering outside both the police station and the health centre. To maintain law and order, police deployed additional forces in the area.
