Turkey Joins Spain, Italy, and Greece in Monitoring Global Sumud Flotilla Near Gaza

Turkey has joined Spain, Italy, and Greece in closely monitoring the Global Sumud Flotilla sailing toward Gaza, according to flight tracking data and reports from Reuters. Three long-endurance drones originating from Turkey’s Corlu airbase have been observed circling above the flotilla for several consecutive days, marking Turkey’s involvement in the mission’s surveillance.

The Turkish foreign and defense ministries, along with the intelligence agency, have not confirmed or denied the purpose of these drone flights.

The Global Sumud Flotilla comprises around 40 civilian vessels carrying activists, lawmakers, and humanitarian workers from multiple countries. The fleet aims to break the Israeli naval blockade to deliver vital aid to the besieged Gaza Strip.

Despite drone attacks and other threats that forced some vessels to pause for repairs near Greece, the flotilla has resumed its journey with nearly 44 boats, including new additions, and is progressing through international waters south of the Dodecanese islands in the Aegean Sea.

Turkey’s drone surveillance is believed to be part of an international effort to monitor the flotilla closely as it nears an area historically marked by interceptions—a “high-risk zone” where tensions and the possibility of confrontation with Israeli forces are at their peak. Spain and Italy have also deployed naval vessels to accompany the flotilla, primarily to protect their nationals aboard amid ongoing regional volatility.

The presence of Turkish drones and naval assets alongside European countries underscores growing international attention on the flotilla’s mission and reflects the geopolitical complexities surrounding the Gaza blockade and humanitarian access.

This development adds another layer to the complex situation unfolding in the eastern Mediterranean as the flotilla pushes forward with its mission despite considerable challenges.
