Honnavar (Fikrokhabar News): Opposition is growing stronger against Karnataka’s proposed 2,000 MW Sharavathi Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Project. After facing massive resistance during a public hearing in Kargal (Shivamogga district) on September 16, the next hearing has been rescheduled for September 18 in Gerusoppa (Uttara Kannada district).

To raise awareness and register protest, a bike rally is being organized from Honnavar to Gerusoppa on September 18, starting at 8:00 AM from Honnavar Circle.

What is the Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project?

The Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project is among Karnataka’s largest proposed power infrastructure projects. Its goal is to balance the fluctuations in renewable energy (especially wind and solar) and ensure steady electricity supply during peak hours.

The project will function like a “water battery” by moving water between Talakalale (upper reservoir) and Gerusoppa (lower reservoir). Water will be pumped uphill when power demand is low, and released downhill to generate electricity when demand is high.

Officials claim:

  • No new dams will be built.
  • Most of the construction will be underground, using tunnels.
  • The project will not harm wildlife significantly, and mitigation measures will be taken.

They argue this project could become a major support system for Karnataka’s renewable energy strategy.

Why is There Public Opposition?

Environmentalists, scientists, and local communities are raising red flags, pointing out that the Sharavathi Valley lies in the fragile Western Ghats, one of the world’s most ecologically sensitive zones.

Key Reasons for Opposition:

  • Forest Loss: Reports suggest thousands of trees could be cut down and hundreds of acres of land may be used.
  • Wildlife Threats: The project area is near the Sharavathi Valley Lion-Tailed Macaque Sanctuary, home to rare and endangered species. Experts fear serious disruption to their habitat and movement.
  • Environmental Risks: Tunnel construction and heavy infrastructure could lead to soil erosion, landslides, and water pollution.
  • Local Community Concerns: Residents have expressed fears about the loss of livelihoods, health risks, and long-term ecological damage. Signature campaigns and public meetings show strong grassroots opposition.

Current Status:

While the Central Electricity Authority (CEA) has approved the project, it still awaits final clearances from the Forest Department and Ministry of Environment. Meanwhile, experts and civil society groups are demanding either a complete reassessment or outright cancellation of the project, citing the Western Ghats’ fragile ecosystem.

The Sharavathi Pumped Storage Project could help meet Karnataka’s future energy needs. However, ignoring the environmental and social costs could lead to irreversible consequences.
