Shashi Tharoor Reaffirms Loyalty to Congress, Backs Rahul Gandhi Ahead of Kerala Polls
Congress MP says he remains committed to the party and praises Rahul Gandhi’s stand against communal politics.

Senior Congress leader and MP Shashi Tharoor has firmly dismissed speculation about differences with the party leadership, reiterating his loyalty to the Congress and expressing strong support for Rahul Gandhi.
Speaking to reporters in Thiruvananthapuram on January 30, Tharoor described Rahul Gandhi as a “sincere” leader and a powerful voice against communalism, hatred, and divisive politics. He said Gandhi is widely respected for consistently opposing such forces in Indian politics.
“I do not have a different opinion on that,” Tharoor said, adding that he has never supported unfair criticism of Gandhi and has always viewed him as a committed leader.
His remarks came shortly after a meeting in New Delhi with Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi. During the discussion, Tharoor raised concerns over his treatment at a recent event in Kochi and what he described as attempts to sideline him within the Kerala unit of the party.
Addressing past controversies, Tharoor clarified that some of his statements, which were portrayed by sections of the media as being favourable to the BJP, were actually made in support of the government or in the national interest. He stressed that on international issues, he prefers to focus on India rather than party politics, a position he said he has consistently maintained.
On questions about internal party differences, Tharoor acknowledged that Congress leaders are expected to follow the party line and said he has always stood with the party during debates and votes in Parliament.
Putting an end to speculation about his political future, Tharoor said clearly, “I am going to be in the Congress and I am not going anywhere.” He also confirmed that he will actively campaign in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections to help the United Democratic Front (UDF) return to power.
His statements are seen as an effort to project unity within the Congress as the party prepares for the crucial Kerala polls, where it hopes to end a decade-long stint in opposition and challenge the ruling Left Democratic Front.
