Sharavati Pump Storage Project Approved by Centre and Previous BJP Government: Minister Mankal S Vaidya
Minister says the project has clearances from central agencies but assures he stands by locals if they are affected.

Karwar: Minister Mankal S Vaidya has confirmed that the Sharavati Pump Storage Project has received approval from both the Central Government and the previous BJP-led state government.
Speaking at a press conference after attending the District Kannada Rajyotsava celebrations in Karwar, Vaidya said the project has been cleared by the Geological Survey of India (GSI) and the Central Electricity Authority (CEA).
He explained that the central government has issued guidelines encouraging states to explore alternative and renewable energy sources, as coal-based power units are being phased out. “The demand for electricity is rising, and we must find new ways to generate power without constructing new dams. The Sharavati project is part of that effort,” he said.
However, the minister reiterated his personal opposition to the project if it leads to the displacement of local communities. “I have said earlier, and I repeat now, that if people are affected by this project, I will oppose it,” he stated.
Vaidya noted that the project spans two districts, and the opinions of the local MPs and MLAs will be crucial in the final decision. “Extensive studies are being carried out by experts from various government departments. The final decision will be based on their findings,” he added.
Highlighting the state’s cooperation in previous energy projects, he mentioned permissions granted for Kaiga, Seabarda, and Kali power projects, emphasizing the government’s commitment to energy development while balancing environmental and social concerns.
When asked about the Bedti-Varada river linking project, the minister said MP Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri had personally discussed the issue with Chief Minister Siddaramaiah. “This is a positive step. Even MP Basavaraj Bommai has supported the need for the Bedti project. The Chief Minister has called a meeting of experts to study the matter further, and another round of discussions will be held soon,” he said.
