Rider Dies in Bhatkal Highway Accident; Wife Critically Injured

Bhatkal, Aug 23: A tragic road mishap on National Highway 66 near Noor Masjid in Bhatkal on Saturday morning claimed the life of a 61-year-old man, while his wife sustained severe injuries.
The deceased has been identified as Eshwara Naik (61), a resident of Murdeshwara. His wife, Bharathi Naik (47), who was riding pillion, was rushed to the Bhatkal Government Hospital with serious wounds.
According to eyewitnesses, the couple was on their way to attend a function in Bhatkal when a speeding tanker hit their two-wheeler from behind. The force of the collision threw Eshwara Naik onto the road, where the tanker ran over him, killing him on the spot.
The accident has sparked renewed concerns among residents regarding the incomplete widening of NH-66 through Bhatkal town. Locals point out that the stretch between Quality Hotel and Noor Masjid, as well as the road section between Shamsuddin Circle and Nawayat Colony, has become increasingly dangerous due to the growing movement of heavy vehicles.
Citizens highlight that the absence of service roads and delays in the highway project make pedestrians and two-wheeler riders highly vulnerable. They have once again urged the authorities to expedite the work to prevent further tragedies.
