Guwahati: A day after the car blast near Delhi’s Red Fort, police in Assam’s Cachar district arrested retired school principal Nazarul Islam over a Facebook post that allegedly politicized the incident.

Islam had commented “Election is coming” under a post about the blast, which authorities say attempted to give the tragedy a political angle.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Crime) Rajat Kumar Pal said that the accused’s post could spread misinformation and create communal tension. “This is a sensitive issue, and some people are trying to exploit it politically to divide communities,” he said. He added that the state’s cybercrime unit acted swiftly after noticing the post.

Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the state government is expanding its social media monitoring network to track such activity more effectively. “Some people have posted smiles or celebratory emojis in reaction to the Delhi blast. This is no less than supporting terrorism. Anyone found doing this in Assam will be arrested immediately,” the Chief Minister said.

Sarma also confirmed that five more individuals have been detained in Assam for allegedly sharing or promoting inflammatory content related to the Delhi blast.

Earlier this year, following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, Assam police had arrested 97 people accused of posting pro-Pakistan messages or content glorifying terrorism.
