Retired Lt Gen Syed Ata Hasnain Appointed Governor of Bihar

Retired Lieutenant General Syed Ata Hasnain has been appointed as the new Governor of Bihar, following an announcement by President Droupadi Murmu in early March 2026.

The appointment is part of a wider reshuffle of governors and lieutenant governors across the country. Hasnain replaces Arif Mohammad Khan, who had been serving as the Governor of Bihar since January 2025.

Hasnain had a distinguished career in the Indian Army, serving the force for nearly four decades. A graduate of the National Defence Academy, he held several important command positions during his service.

One of his most notable assignments was as the commander of the XV Corps (Chinar Corps) in Srinagar from 2012 to 2014. During this period, he oversaw key counter-militancy operations in the Kashmir Valley while also promoting outreach programmes aimed at building trust between security forces and civilians.

These initiatives included youth engagement programmes, sports activities, and educational outreach designed to create opportunities for young people and encourage dialogue with local communities.

Following his retirement from the army, Hasnain continued his public service as a member of the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA). In this role, he contributed to strengthening disaster preparedness and response strategies across the country.

He has also remained active in academic and policy discussions, frequently delivering lectures at universities and forums on topics such as national security, leadership, and civic responsibility.

As Governor, Hasnain will assume constitutional responsibilities in Bihar, including summoning the state legislative assembly, giving assent to bills passed by the legislature, and ensuring that governance is carried out in accordance with the Constitution. The executive authority of the state, however, remains with the elected government led by Chief Minister Nitish Kumar.

The announcement has drawn appreciation from leaders and observers across political and social circles. Many have highlighted Hasnain’s long record of national service and leadership in both military and public life.

Observers also noted that the appointment is being seen by some as a significant moment reflecting the contributions of Indian Muslims to national institutions such as the armed forces, civil services, and judiciary.

With his experience in administration, security management, and disaster response, Hasnain is expected to bring valuable expertise to the constitutional office as he begins his tenure in Bihar.
