Qatar, Kuwait and UAE Close Airspace as Regional Tensions Escalate
Gulf nations take precautionary measures following US-Israel strikes on Iran and Iranian retaliation toward American bases.

Three Gulf nations have closed their airspace as a precautionary measure amid rapidly escalating military conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran.
Qatar, Kuwait and UAE Shut Skies
Qatari authorities have closed the country’s airspace to all flight operations, according to aviation officials. The decision follows an urgent alert issued earlier Saturday advising all residents to stay indoors and away from military sites .
Kuwait’s Civil Aviation Authority announced the suspension and cancellation of all flights from Kuwait to Iran until further notice, citing the complete closure of Iranian airspace and ongoing military developments in the region. The authority stated the move was taken “to ensure the highest standards of aviation safety and in line with international procedures applied during exceptional circumstances” .
The UAE’s General Civil Aviation Authority announced a temporary and partial closure of the country’s airspace as “an exceptional precautionary measure,” citing the need to ensure the safety of flights, aircrews, and national territory amid rapidly evolving security developments in the region .
Regional Impact on Aviation
The airspace closures have disrupted flight operations across the Gulf. flydubai confirmed that several flights have been impacted, with services to Iran (Tehran, Lar, Mashhad) and Tel Aviv cancelled. The airline stated it is “working to minimise disruption to our schedule, and affected flights are being rerouted, returning to stand, or cancelled” .
Air India had earlier diverted its Delhi-Tel Aviv flight to Mumbai after Israel closed its airspace, and other carriers are taking wider detours to avoid the region .
Wider Regional Closures
The Gulf closures follow similar moves by:
- Israel — closed its airspace to civilian traffic, diverting inbound flights and grounding departures
- Iran — shut its airspace and imposed temporary telecommunications restrictions
- Iraq — closed its airspace, affecting major east–west flight corridors
The closures have disrupted one of the world’s busiest aviation corridors linking Europe, the Gulf, and Asia, forcing airlines to reroute aircraft around restricted airspace .
Travel Advisory
Passengers traveling to or through the Gulf region are advised to:
- Check flight status before departing for the airport
- Expect rerouting, delays, and potential cancellations
- Monitor airline travel waivers for flexible rebooking options
- Allow extended connection times when transiting Gulf hubs
The situation remains highly fluid as regional authorities continue to monitor developments.
