MP Mohammad Jawed Flags Safety Concerns of Muslims in Delhi’s Uttam Nagar, Writes to Amit Shah
Letter alleges threats and fear among residents, seeks urgent action and accountability from authorities.
New Delhi: Lok Sabha MP Mohammad Jawed has written to Union Home Minister Amit Shah raising serious concerns about the safety of the Muslim community in West Delhi’s Uttam Nagar.
In his letter dated March 18, 2026, Jawed expressed “deep concern and urgency” over what he described as a growing atmosphere of fear in the area. He alleged that members of the community are facing open threats, intimidation, and sustained pressure in their daily lives, suggesting the situation has escalated beyond a routine law-and-order issue.
The MP, who represents Kishanganj in Bihar, pointed to what he called a pattern of targeted hostility. According to the letter, the circulation of hate content, inflammatory slogans, and public threats has contributed to an environment where some residents reportedly feel unsafe even in the national capital.
Jawed also raised concerns about the response of law enforcement agencies. He noted that failure to act decisively against such threats could weaken public trust in the police and embolden those attempting to disrupt communal harmony.
Invoking constitutional safeguards, the MP referred to key provisions of the Constitution of India, including the right to equality, freedom, and life with dignity, stating that these principles appear to be under strain in the current situation.
He urged the Union Home Ministry to take immediate cognisance of the matter and ensure accountability for any lapses. The letter calls for firm and impartial action by the police against individuals or groups involved in issuing threats or spreading hate.
Additionally, Jawed demanded visible security measures to protect vulnerable residents and restore confidence on the ground. He also suggested an independent review of police actions to address concerns of possible bias or inaction.
The communication has been supported by several public representatives, with multiple signatures included, indicating broader political concern over the issue.
Warning against inaction, Jawed said that any delay or silence could send a dangerous message that intimidation can override the rule of law. He stressed that such a situation would be incompatible with the values of a constitutional democracy.
The matter now puts the spotlight on the Union Home Ministry and Delhi Police, with expectations of a prompt response to the concerns raised.
