Sambhal: Authorities in Sambhal have covered around 10 mosques, including the historic Shahi Jama Masjid, with large tarpaulin sheets ahead of Holi celebrations, describing the step as a precautionary measure to maintain communal harmony.

District officials said the decision was taken to prevent colour from being thrown on religious structures during Holi processions passing through sensitive routes. Two separate processions are scheduled to pass in front of the Jama Masjid, where similar incidents in previous years had reportedly led to tensions.

According to the administration, tarpaulin sheets have been installed on mosque exteriors, and protective coatings have been applied at some locations to prevent staining from colours. Heavy police deployment has been arranged across the city, with additional surveillance in areas identified as sensitive.

District Magistrate Rajendra Pensiya said the move was finalised with the consent of mosque caretakers during a peace committee meeting. He added that, as per local practice, the municipal body arranges protective coverings for structures situated along major procession routes.

Officials clarified that any other religious site seeking similar protection would also be permitted to take preventive measures.

The administration said the objective is to ensure the festival is celebrated peacefully and to avoid disputes. Similar security arrangements were reportedly implemented during recent Rang Ekadashi observances, with police maintaining heightened vigilance.

Holi is scheduled to be observed on March 3–4, and authorities said additional precautions are being taken in view of past tensions in the area.
