Maharashtra Building Collapse in Virar Claims 17 Lives; Rescue Operations Ongoing

Virar/Mumbai, August 28, 2025 – A tragic building collapse in the Virar area of Palghar district has claimed the lives of 17 people, with the rescue teams still working to retrieve more survivors. The incident occurred late on Tuesday night at Rambai Apartment in the Vijay Nagar locality, which is reportedly an unauthorized construction.

The building, constructed in 2011, had 50 flats, and 12 of them collapsed during the accident. According to initial reports, a birthday party was underway in one of the flats when the disaster struck. A survivor described the scene, saying, “People were dancing and celebrating when suddenly the entire building collapsed like a pack of cards.”

As of now, 9 people have been rescued alive, and several others are feared to be trapped under the debris. Rescue operations are being carried out by joint teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), police, and the fire brigade. Local residents have also joined in the relief efforts.

Authorities have arrested the builder of the building as part of the investigation. The Virar police are pursuing legal action for the building’s unauthorized construction and the tragic loss of life.

In response to the disaster, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his grief over the incident and announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the families of the deceased. Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar assured that a thorough investigation would be conducted and strict action would be taken against those found responsible.

President Droupadi Murmu also expressed her condolences, sending her sympathies to the affected families and wishing for the quick recovery of the injured.

The collapse has raised serious concerns about the safety of unauthorized constructions in the state, and authorities have vowed to take strict action against those who bypass building regulations.
