Kasaragod (PTI): A man allegedly upset over the disconnection of electricity to his home for non-payment of bills removed the fuses from seven transformers, leading to a power outage in several parts of Kasaragod town, Kerala State Electricity Board (KSEB) officials said on Saturday.

The disruption occurred around 6:45 pm on Friday, plunging parts of Kasaragod town and nearby areas into darkness.

“Within minutes, we began receiving multiple complaints about power failure. However, when we checked the supply lines, no faults were detected,” a KSEB official told PTI.

During a further inspection, officials discovered that the fuses from the transformers had been deliberately removed. Some of the fuses were found discarded near the transformers, and several were damaged. KSEB technicians used spare fuses to restore power by 8 pm, the official said.

Local residents told KSEB staff that they saw a man removing the fuses shortly before the outage.

According to officials, the suspect—who lives under the Nellikuzi section—had earlier visited the KSEB office and created a disturbance after his electricity supply was cut due to unpaid bills.

Based on the information, police detained him for questioning. Officers said the man claimed he was dealing with mental health issues and lived with his elderly father.

Police added that a formal case would be registered once the KSEB submits an official complaint. KSEB officials said they would file the complaint on Saturday, as the incident caused over an hour-long outage and resulted in damage to several fuses.
