Karnataka’s Third Tallest National Flagpole Erected in Puttur
80-metre-high flagpole installed near Mahalingeshwara Temple; trial hoisting draws large crowd
Puttur: Karnataka’s third tallest national flagpole was successfully installed at Nellikatte in Puttur on Sunday, marking a significant civic moment for the town. The massive 80-metre-high structure has been erected near the private bus stand, opposite the Mahalingeshwara Temple, at a cost of ₹1 crore.
The installation work began on Sunday morning and was completed by evening with the help of a large crane. As part of a trial run, the national tricolour was unfurled briefly before being lowered. The event drew hundreds of residents, who gathered at the site to witness the historic moment.
Local MLA Ashok Kumar Rai, along with other dignitaries, was present during the installation. Addressing the gathering, Rai said that hoisting the national flag at such a great height had long been a dream for the people of Puttur. He recalled stating six months ago that Puttur would set an example of true patriotism.
The MLA noted that no other taluk-level Assembly constituency in Karnataka has a national flagpole of this height. With this installation, he said, Puttur can proudly claim to host the state’s third tallest national flagpole at the taluk level.
Rai added that lighting arrangements would be completed within a week, after which the national flag would be formally hoisted. The flag to be flown measures 2,400 square feet. Each flag costs around ₹60,000 and will be replaced three times a year.
Emphasising the spirit behind the project, the MLA said that patriotism is not expressed only through speeches, but through meaningful actions and enduring symbols that inspire the public.
