Karnataka’s Shakti Scheme Enters International Book of Records for Issuing 500 Crore Free Bus Tickets to Women
State’s free bus travel initiative for women earns ‘World Record of Excellence’ recognition; hailed as a model for other states.

Bengaluru: The Shakti Scheme, Karnataka’s flagship initiative providing free bus travel for women, has received global recognition after entering the ‘International Book of Records – World Record of Excellence’ for issuing over 500 crore free tickets to women passengers.
Transport Minister T. Ramalinga Reddy, speaking on the achievement, said the scheme had already been recognised by the Golden Book of World Records earlier and continues to set benchmarks in public welfare.
“The Shakti Scheme has empowered women socially, economically, and professionally across Karnataka. The fact that other states have adopted similar schemes is a testament to its success,” the minister stated.
He credited the collective efforts of officers, employees, and leaders of all four State Road Transport Corporations (KSRTC, BMTC, NWKRTC, and KKRTC) for helping achieve this milestone.
Launched as part of the Congress government’s election promises, the Shakti Scheme allows women to travel for free on most state-run buses, aiming to reduce their transport costs and increase their mobility.
Minister Reddy expressed pride in the recognition and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to expanding and improving the scheme further.
