Karnataka on Monday announced the launch of KEO, a compact and affordable AI-ready personal computer designed and developed entirely within the state. The initiative aims to bridge digital gaps and make intelligent computing accessible to people across Karnataka, officials said.

KEO—short for Knowledge-driven, Economical, Open-source—has been created by the Department of Electronics, IT & BT in partnership with KEONICS (Karnataka State Electronics Development Corporation Limited). Chief Minister Siddaramaiah will officially unveil the device during the opening ceremony of the Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS) 2025 on November 18.

Speaking at the curtain-raiser event for BTS 2025, IT/BT and Rural Development Minister Priyank Kharge described the launch as a globally first-of-its-kind step by any state government.
“Karnataka is launching its own affordable AI personal computer. This bold, disruptive move reflects the spirit of the state—built, designed and assembled here by local startups and Kannadigas,” he said.

Kharge emphasised that KEO was designed to ensure that students, engineers, creators, innovators, and households have access to powerful computing at the grassroots level. “KEO is not a luxury device—it is an inclusion device. Affordable mass computing will empower students, small businesses and families to participate fully in the digital economy,” he added.

According to the government, KEO uses an open-source RISC-V processor and runs a Linux-based operating system. It comes equipped with 4G connectivity, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB-A and USB-C ports, HDMI and audio support. The device includes productivity, learning and programming tools, along with an on-device AI core capable of running applications without internet access.

One of the standout features is BUDDH, an AI agent preloaded on the device and trained on the Karnataka DSERT curriculum, enabling students in low-connectivity areas to access guided learning.

Visitors to the Bengaluru Tech Summit will be able to try out the device and explore its potential in enabling affordable AI-powered computing.

KEONICS Chairman Sharath Kumar Bache Gowda said KEO reinforces Karnataka’s commitment to open-source and locally adaptable technology. “The device will be rolled out across schools, colleges, small businesses, government offices and homes, supporting digital learning, skill development and entrepreneurship,” he said.
He added that KEO forms a key part of the state’s mission to ensure decentralised tech growth in every district.

The 28th edition of the Bengaluru Tech Summit, organised by the Department of Electronics, IT & BT and the Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), will run under the theme Futurise. The event will bring together global leaders, policymakers, investors, startups and innovators to discuss advancements in deep-tech, biotech, health-tech, semiconductors and startup ecosystems.
