Karnataka Speaker Directs Govt to Ensure 4 VIP IPL Tickets for Each MLA
MLAs allege “disrespect” by cricket body; demand better seating and access at Bengaluru stadium

In a lively discussion in the Karnataka Legislative Assembly, Speaker U T Khader on Thursday directed the state government to ensure that every MLA receives at least four VIP tickets for IPL matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
The direction came after several legislators across party lines complained of being treated with “disrespect” by the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA), which manages the stadium.
Leader of the Opposition R Ashoka and other MLAs said they were being given only one ticket per match and often lacked proper seating arrangements. Some members also called for a dedicated lounge for legislators and their families.
The issue gained urgency as defending champions Royal Challengers Bengaluru are set to face Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026 opener in Bengaluru on March 28.
Responding to the concerns, Deputy Chief Minister D K Shivakumar assured the House that he would immediately speak to KSCA officials and update members in the next session. Noting his association with the body, he said MLAs had every right to request such facilities.
The matter came up during a broader discussion on Bengaluru’s development, when Minister K J George referred to a past proposal for a new sports arena, which was later put on hold after objections within the Cabinet. Chief Minister Siddaramaiah eventually decided not to proceed with the plan.
During the debate, BJP MLA C N Ashwath Narayan questioned the need for government support to cricket bodies, arguing that the sport has become highly commercialised.
R Ashoka also criticised KSCA, pointing out that the association had received land at a nominal rent but still failed to extend basic courtesies to elected representatives. He added that MLAs often struggle to secure tickets even for their families.
Several Congress MLAs, including Vijayananda Kashappanavar, supported the demand, saying legislators should be given more tickets, proper seating, and access to better facilities. Some even alleged that tickets are sold on the black market at inflated prices while MLAs are left without access.
Intervening in the discussion, Speaker Khader emphasised that legislators should not have to queue up or face inconvenience due to lack of recognition. He instructed the government to ensure that at least four VIP tickets are provided to each MLA for themselves and their families.
He also lightened the mood by jokingly asking MLAs to approach the Deputy Chief Minister—not him—for IPL tickets.
Meanwhile, Ashoka raised concerns about licensing policies, questioning why KSCA had been granted permission to serve liquor at the stadium, and urged the government to tighten regulations if necessary.
