Karnataka High Court Allows Socio-Economic Survey to Continue

Bengaluru: The Karnataka High Court on Thursday declined to halt the ongoing socio-economic and educational survey, often referred to as the “caste survey.”
A division bench, including Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Joshi, ruled that there was no reason to stop the survey. However, the court set clear conditions. It directed the state government to ensure that all data collected remains completely confidential.
The court also stressed that participation in the survey is not mandatory. The Karnataka State Commission for Backward Classes (KSCBC), which is conducting the survey, has been instructed to issue a public notice clarifying that providing information is entirely voluntary.
“The data collected will not be disclosed to anyone,” the bench stated, adding that the KSCBC must guarantee the information is kept secure and private.
This decision comes amid concerns raised by various groups regarding the survey currently underway across the state.
